چکیده

A total of 18 pigs from litters in which one or more littermates died from stress were used to study the effect of sampling technique and exercise on plasma creatine phosphokinase (CPK). Plasma CPK in stress susceptible pigs was compared to CPK concentration in 7 control pigs with no history of stress. Plasma CPK was similar in samples obtained from cannulae and first and second samples obtained via puncture of the anterior vena cava. This suggests that blood samples can be obtained by a variety of methods for CPK determination if care is used in the collection procedure. Stress susceptible pigs had higher CPK values than control pigs and the CPK increase following exercise was much greater in stress susceptible than in control pigs. Plasma CPK after exercise increased to more than 100 sigma units/ml in 41% of the stress susceptible pigs, reaching maximum concentrations by 8 hours after exercise. These studies indicate that if blood CPK is used as an indicator of stress susceptibility, differences between susceptible and non-susceptible pigs can be greatly magnified by a standard exercise prior to samplings. There was no significant difference in transmission values among the control pigs, stress susceptible pigs with high CPK or the stress susceptible pigs with low CPK. However, stress-susceptible pigs tended to have higher transmission values.

Effects of thermal stress, breed and stress susceptibility on corticosteroid binding globulin in swine.

Day-to-day variations in binding capacity and association constant of corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) and plasma cortisol levels were determined in crossbred gilts maintained under controlled or fluctuating environmental temperature and humidity regimes. In addition, effect of breed and stress susceptibility of swine on CBG properties and plasma cortisol concentrations were also studied. ...

Background & Aim: The biological effects of potent oxidative agents in human body are under anti-oxidative control. Functional defects of organs may result from reactions of free radicals with the cell membrane. It is known that major targets of oxygen radicals are cell membrane lipids. Some reports indicate the role of peroxides in development of atherosclerosis. Human body tissues(eg.eryt...

Response of stress-susceptible and stress-resistant Hampshire pigs to electrical stress. I. Physiological and biochemical effects.

Stress susceptible (SS) and stress resistant (SR) purebred Hampshire swine, weighing approximately 100 kg, were utilized to study the effects of electrical stress on plasma creatine phosphokinase (CPK), blood pH, plasma lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), plasma glucocorticoids, rectal temperature, heart rate and respiration rate. Blood samples were obtained from jugular cannulas 15 rain and 5 rain pre...

Influence of caffeine on blood creatine phosphokinase levels in swine.

Eight stress-susceptible and eight normal pigs weighing 35 to 50 kg were studied to determine if caffeine administration would trigger the stress syndrome and affect blood CPK levels. The pigs were littermates of Yorkshire descent. One gram of caffeine (dissolved in 10 ml of saline-sodium benzoate solution) was infused into the pigs through a jugular catheter at a rate of 1.0 ml/min. Blood samp...
